What does a Teen need to do in order to get a Texas Driver’s License?

First

•You must attend a 24-hour classroom course.

• You must be at least 15 years of age, or be turning 15 within the same month of the class that you are attending.

Second

•You must attend the first three days of class consecutively and have your class balance paid in full to obtain certification for an instructional permit.

  • You will take the instructional permit packet provided by our school to your local DPS office to apply for and obtain the learner’s license.

•Concurrent with classroom time and only after you have obtained your learner’s license from the DPS, the student may begin practicing driving with a licensed parent or guardian so that they will be ready for our in-car instruction once the classroom hours are completed.

The student is required to log 30 hours of practice with a parent. This log will be provided by your driving school in your instructional permit packet

This does not need to be completed until you're ready to take your road exam.

Third

After you finish your 24 hours of classroom:

  • You must complete 7 hours of driving and 7 hours of observation behind the wheel with our school instructors.

  • You must also complete the 30 hours of behind the wheel practice with a parent or guardian.

Fourth

•Once you have completed the 14 hours (7/7) of driving instruction with our teachers and 30 hours at home, you will qualify to receive a certification for a drivers license.

•After obtaining this qualification, there are a few things you must check first before scheduling a road exam.

  • You must be at least 16 years old,

  • have held your learner's permit for at least 6 months if under the age of 18,

  • and completed the complete driver's education course (24 hr class / 14 hrs drive/observe / 30 hrs parent hrs)

•You have the option of scheduling a road exam with your local Third Party Skills Testing Driving School (TDS) or local DPS office.

Last

•Before scheduling your driving exam, you have one last thing to do.

•You must visit https://impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov/ and watch a 2-hour informational video. This short course will also give you a certification that will be needed at the time of your scheduled road exam.
